The GWM Ora, a funky and urban-chic all-electric compact car, has made its entry into the rapidly growing market of electric vehicles in New Zealand. Manufactured by Great Wall Motors, a Chinese automaker, this sleek little car is capturing attention with its unique design, impressive specifications, and affordable price tag.

Eye-Catching Design

The GWM Ora boasts an appealing and rounded retro-inspired body that exudes playfulness and sophistication. Its grille, resembling a cartoon character, adds to its charm. However, don’t be fooled by its cute exterior, as the GWM Ora incorporates modern features such as LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, 360-degree camera views, and ample parking sensors.

Models and Colors

The compact electric vehicle is available in three specific models: Standard Range (as tested), Long Range, and GT. Additionally, customers can choose from five attractive color options, including Aurora Green, Glacier Blue, Mars Red, Sun Black, and Hamilton White.

Spacious and Functional Interior

Step inside the GWM Ora, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its spacious and functional cabin. The retro-styled leatherette seats offer comfort and support, with generous headroom and legroom even for taller drivers. The absence of a major central tunnel creates additional room in the rear. Although the boot space is slightly compromised due to the car’s compact dimensions (4.24 meters long), it still provides enough space for a weekly shopping trip and more.

Attention to Detail and Quality

The build quality of the GWM Ora is impressive, evident from the confident thud when closing the doors. The leatherette steering wheel feels good to the touch, and even the door cards feature contrast stitching. The interior exudes serenity, with the infotainment screen displaying Koi carp upon entry. However, individuals with astigmatism might find the small font size challenging without their glasses.

Modern Technology and Convenience

The GWM Ora features uncluttered and easily readable technology, including two large touchscreen displays: a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. When turned off, these displays join as one expansive panel that sits atop a tactile and contrast-stitched dash. The EV includes popular features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a suite of driver assistance features. The instrument cluster presents information in a minimalist manner with white backgrounds. Notable extras include a wireless charging pad, keyless entry, and a buttonless start, reminiscent of Tesla and Volvo EVs. Furthermore, there’s a power-saving button for extended periods spent in the cabin.

Impressive Performance

The GWM Ora delivers surprising performance on the road. Drive selection (D, N, R, P) is handled through a bevelled dial on the center console, while drive modes (Eco, Auto, Normal, and Sport) can be chosen via a button near the steering wheel. Engaging Sport mode provides a turbo-feel boost to the driving experience, accompanied by a shot-style noise. To enhance eco driving, the EV offers three separate regenerative braking modes and the option for “one pedal drive,” allowing for customization of steering responsiveness. The Ora also provides an economical driving guidance report, indicating energy-saving habits.
