Loblaw, Canada’s largest grocer, is taking a significant step towards sustainable transportation by ordering five Kenworth T680 trucks powered by Toyota fuel cells, making them some of the first hydrogen-powered trucks to be brought to Canada. With a range of over 700 km between refueling, these units address the range-related limitations of battery-electric models.
Investing in Green Transportation
This move marks Loblaw’s continued investment in zero-emission trucks. The company already operates two battery-electric day cabs that shuttle between a distribution center in Boucherville, Quebec, and stores in the Montreal area. Furthermore, Loblaw has placed orders for approximately 35 battery-electric vehicles from various manufacturers, with many of them expected to be on the road by the end of 2024.
Hydrogen-Powered Trucks for Longer Distances
Wayne Scott, Loblaw’s senior director of transportation maintenance, emphasized the company’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions and preserving Canada’s natural resources and beauty. He highlighted the advantages of hydrogen-powered trucks, stating, “With a longer driving range compared to battery-electric vehicles, we see hydrogen-powered trucks as an excellent way to reduce emissions for our trucks that travel longer distances.”
Tackling Climate Change with Advanced Technologies
As a large company with an extensive supply chain network, Loblaw’s trucks operate across every province and territory in Canada, leaving a significant environmental footprint. Chief Administrative Officer Rob Wiebe emphasized the company’s responsibility to fight climate change and explore new avenues for reducing carbon emissions. He stated, “We see the opportunity to fight climate change and know we have a responsibility to find new ways to cut our carbon emissions. As technologies advance, we will advance too.”
Future Goals for Sustainability
Loblaw has set ambitious targets for sustainability. By 2030, the company aims to electrify its 160 day cabs, contributing to a greener transportation fleet. Additionally, Loblaw is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its entire business by 2040.
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Loblaw has already taken steps to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. According to the company’s latest Environmental, Social, and Governance Report, it successfully reduced its emissions by 8% from 2020 to 2022.
